District description: South - Ginneken

Het Ginneken (Breda South) used to be a village. The village of Ginneken was transformed into the municipality of Ginneken en Bavel in 1814, together with Bavel. On 1 January 1942 Ginneken was annexed by Breda under the influence of the occupying forces. Due to its favorable location, on the edge of the forest and a river and the proximity to the city, Ginneken was a favorite place for the nobility, peasant renters and pensioners in the first half of the 20th century. These people lived on 'stand' and the village therefore had a considerable number of beautiful mansions. The housing construction is still largely pre-WWII. Partly due to the charm of that architectural style, the Ginneken is a very popular neighborhood to live in. The Ginneken also owes its charm to the Ginnekenmarkt, which exudes a cozy atmosphere through its terraces, cafes, shops and restaurants. At the moment about 5200 people live there.
