Sport

In the city of Breda there are plenty of sports and recreational opportunities. There is an indoor artificial ice rink (Breda Noord), there is a kart track (Breda Noord), 16 football clubs, 12 tennis clubs, 5 hockey clubs, 5 golf clubs, 21 fitness centers and 7 riding stables. Those who like to walk or jog in nature have the choice of various forests. In addition, there are various associations that are engaged in all kinds of other sports activities.


Breda has 4 public swimming pools. In addition, there are 6 swimming pools that are connected to fitness centers, etc. Public swimming pools: Indoor swimming pool 'Wisselaar' (North); Covered and partly open-air swimming pool 'Sonsbeeck' (South); Outdoor swimming pool 'Wolfslaar' (South); Outdoor swimming pool 'Kuil' (Prinsenbeek).

Football clubs

The most famous football club in Breda is the club NAC. Created on September 19, 1912, after a merger between NOAD (Never Give Up Always Continue) and ADVENDO (Pleasant By Entertainment And Useful By Relaxation). NAC stands for: “(N)oad (A)dvendo (C)ombination”.

Breda has 12 tennis clubs spread across the city, namely: TV Bavel (Bavel); BLTV (South/Ruiterbos); TVHB (North West/Kievitsloop); TV Heksenwiel (North West/Heksenwiel); TV IJpelaar (South/IJpelaar); TV Markant (South/Boeimeer) TC Breda (South/Mastbos); Teteringse TV (Teteringen); TV Prinsenbeek (Prinsenbeek); UTV (Ulvenhout); TV Breda-North (North); TV 'T Ei (Center)


The sport of tennis as we know it today was introduced to the Netherlands from England around 1880. The rules of the modern tennis game can be traced back to a game that dates back to the Middle Ages: bouncing. Playing ball was a popular pastime at the European royal courts in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In bouncing, a leather ball filled with hair or straw was thrown with the palm of the hand and bounced back.

Hockeyclubs

There are 5 different hockey clubs in the Breda region, namely: Push (Oost/ Brabantpark); Breda (Zuid/ Ruiterbos); Zwart-Wit (South/Ginneken/Ulvenhout); MHC Teteringen (Teteringen); Prinsenbeek (Prinsenbeek).


In 1891 Pim Mulier brought field hockey from England to the Netherlands. Haarlem was the city where the first hockey was played on grass. Bandy players started playing field hockey outside the winter season. In 1895 was already played for the championship of the Netherlands; the winner received the Pim Mulier challenge cup. In 1898, the Nederlandsche Hockey and Bandy Bond (NHBB) was founded by five clubs in the Krasnapolsky hotel in Amsterdam. The oldest hockey club in Breda is 'Hockeyclub Breda'; founded in 1906.

Golf associations

There are 5 golf clubs in the Breda region, namely: Albatross (Prinsenbeek); Princenbosch (Bavel); Toxandria (Molenschot / Bavel); De Haenen (Teteringen); Bergvliet (Terheijden).


The first game of golf probably took place in Loenen aan de Vecht, near Kronenburg Castle, on Boxing Day 1297. The more recent history of golf has long been a source of conflict between the Dutch and the Scots; both claim to be the true birthplace of today's golf game. Around 1650 golf was played in Holland with 'Schotse klieken' (sticks), but at the beginning of the same century large quantities of balls of Dutch manufacture were exported to Scotland. From these facts it is clear that more than three and a half centuries ago golf was played in the Netherlands in whatever form.

Riding stables

Breda has 7 riding schools. There are also a number of horse boarding houses. Riding stables in the Breda region: Roosberg (Bavel); Overbos (Prinsenbeek); Sintels (North); Manege Molenschot (Molenschot); Ruitersportcentrum Breda (South/IJpelaar); Mastbosruiters (North); Stal Huijbregts (Princenhage)



The history of horsemanship began in the Renaissance (1540). Driving regulations were disseminated thanks to the books. In the beginning barbaric means were used to master the horsemanship. By importing Spanish horses, mounts could be bred that were suitable for work in the riding school. Gradually, work was done on a less hard way to learn riding skills.

Fitness centers

There are 21 fitness centers in the Breda region. Thanks to the expert guidance, modern equipment, professional instructors, but above all because of the cozy atmosphere, many people go to the gym. These fitness centers are spread over the various districts.


What once started with training on benches, push-ups, pull-ups, training with hand weights, etc., has today grown into a very extensive sport, with the associated, ever-developing equipment. In this way, various goals can be pursued. For example: muscle development, muscle strengthening, strengthening the muscles, sports-oriented training or figure correction.

Skating rink

The indoor Kunstijsbaan Breda (North) has a very sporty and atmospheric space with its 400-meter track and an ice floor of 30 x 60 meters. From competitive skating to recreational games, from young to old; everyone is having a great time there. Whether it concerns a sporty staff event, a winter party or a meeting combined with ice skating or team building, everything is possible!


On September 17, 1882, the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Schaatsenrijders Bond (KNSB) was founded as an umbrella organization for speed skating. Nowadays, long and short track speed skating, short track speed skating, figure skating, marathon skating, clean riding, skating and touring skating are represented at the KNSB.
